Toru Shimakawa

TORU SHIMAKAWA


Born in Chiba, Japan. A member of Designers Union in New York (IATSE / United Scenic Artists 829) and currently the president of Japan Association of Theatre Designers and Technicians. He studied scenic design at San Francisco State University, Studio and Forum of Stage Design and also with Ming Cho Lee in New York. As a scenic artist he has worked at Metropolitan Opera House and major Broadway scenic shops from 1980 to 1984.

He settled down to a designer's life in Tokyo in 1985, and he started his design career with the Shochiku production of "ROMEO AND JULIET", directed by Tamasaburo Bando. He has designed over 100 productions; including New National Theatre production of opera
"HIKARI"; Kansai Nikikai production of "NORMA", "LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR", "ALBERT HERRING" and "L'ELISIR D'AMORE"; Kobe City Opera Production of "MADAMA BUTTERFLY"; Nissay production of "RASHOMON"; New National Theatre production of "CRIME AND PUNISHMENT"; Tokyo Nikikai production of "DIE FLEDERMAUS"; New National Theatre production of ballet "BONSHO NO KOE (THE TALES OF THE HEIKE)"choreographed by Jun Ishi. Also his musical design credits include Amon Miyamoto's "I GOT MERMAN" and "ANYTHING GOES", and Glen Walford's"TITANIC THE MUSICAL" "GRAND HOTEL" and "TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA" and John Caird's "THE BEGGAR'S OPERA".
