Jazz Pianist, Composer, Arranger, Music Producer
Born in Kobe, Japan, graduated from West Virginia University with a linguistics major, and later studied and performed with Nathan Davis at the University of Pittsburgh. He spent most of 80's in the States and toured with Grammy winning Chuck Mangione in the late 80's.

Back to Japan in 1990, he produced a series of CD's resulting in many awards, and was also much in demand for commercial recording work. In the mid 90', he performed the soundtrack for the platinum winning “Neo Genesis Evangelion” which became a global success.

Since 2001, Kuriya has been writing and producing songs for best selling pop artist, Ken Hirai. In 2002, he completed the movie soundtrack for “Nitaboh” performed by the Warsaw Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.In 2004, Kuriya performed with his own group and with Herbie Hancock at "Tokyo Jazz", the largest jazz festival in Japan, and in Paris for the “International Music Day” organised by UNESCO, with such greats as Billy Cobham, John Faddis ,and Jonny Griffin.

Since 2005 to present, Kuriya tours Europe every year including countries like France, UK, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Germany and also other parts of the world as Egypt, Taiwan, Australia forming different trios and groups for performance and also holding workshops and active collaborations with local artists all in great success.

2008- Performed at Taichun Jazz festival as one of the featured artists.
2007- 3rd European tour including Morocco, France and Italy.
2007- Performed at TanJazz festival as one of the featured artists.
2006- Produced JAJO (Japan -Australia Jazz Orchestra) project.
2006- "JAJO" at “TOKYO JAZZ” festival in Tokyo, "Jazz Now" festival in Sydney, and 6 more performances in Japan and Australia.
2006- 2nd European tour including performance for the "City of London Festival" and "Cologne Jazz Night".
2005- 1st European tour at five venues in Koln, Rome, Paris and Birmingham.
2005- Music producer for an animation movie "FURUSATO-JAPAN".
2004- Performed for "International Music Day" session by the committee of UNESCO in Paris.
2004- "Makoto Kuriya Group" at “TOKYO JAZZ” festival.
1995- "Jazz Yatora Festival" in India as an ambassador of goodwill with own unit.
1990- The First Prize of Young Pianist Division for Swing Journal.
1990- Westinghouse Cultural Award.
1989- The First Prize Pianist Award in Ohio Jazz Competition.
...and many other appearances.
The list also goes on to song-writing of commercials, TV theme songs, radio theme songs, fashion shows, producing work for vocal and instrumental artists, and many guest appearances for concert and broadcast performances.
