Pat Metheny technique <Wide In-position> by Acousphere Toshi Hi! I am Toshi from Acousphere. I introduce one of the great techniques of Pat Metheny. Learn this technique which has a great relation to Pat's phrasing!
We know the word "In-position" as the technique to play stable single notes, arranging each four fingers to be on frets in sequence.
On the other hand, Pat's "Wide In-position" is similar to In-position but is a great technique to create Pat Metheny Music and his phrases.
Also it has a potential to make new ideas of playing.
So let's try it and find your new vocabularies for phrasing!
How to play "Wide In-position"?
1: At first place all of your fingers to first string like regular In-position.
Move your thumb on the same fret as your third finger.
In the picture, you can see both thumb and third finger are in the seventh fret.
2: Keep your first finger pushing the string, and move the rest of fingers away from the string.
3: On releasing the first finger, touch tenth fret with little finger. Now you feel it is so easy to make this big moving.
The reason is because the thumb is already located on seventh fret. In the left picture, you see the final form of the fingers.
It became like a regular In-position form.
4: Furthermore, it gives us a great potential to play.
You can move the fingers much further!
In the picture, the little finger touches twelfth fret.
Compare to the beginning position, the little finger moves between eighth fret to twelfth fret.
And you can try further and further!
If you use regular In-position and finger stretching, you cannot move like this.
This is the great point of "Wide In-position".
Let's try this and make new phrases by your own style! After I copied Pat's phrases from his DVD and analyzed them, I found there were many phrases created by "Wide In-position".
In other words, he could create his style of phrases because he had the idea of "Wide In-position".
Now we know the importance of learning techniques.
If you can use a special technique of a great guitarist like "Wide In-position", you can be one step closer to him and get a part of his sense of playing!
Let's try this technique or others with a spirit of challenging.
Good luck!!
