Historic Village of Shirakawa-go in Gifu


Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go locates north-west end of Gifu Prefecture deep in mountain district. In 1935, Bruno Taut, German architect found that Gassho style house in Shirakawa village was very unique, and it was highly logical and rational architecture fit for peoples' life style. Gassho style was not like any other architecture in Japan. He gave high praise in Japanese architecture to Gassho style in Shirakawa village, which was widely introduced by his book, "Rediscovering Japanese Beauty", and caught the world's attention. "Shirakawa-go" was registered into the world cultural heritage of UNESCO in 1996. Now it became one of the popular sightseeing spots in Japan.
