Smoke and Mirrors

収録作中では短篇の代表作でコミック化もされた"Murder Misteries"、日本語訳もある"Chivalry"、ダークファンタジー版白雪姫の"Snow, Glass, Apples"等がやはり良い出来ですが、個人的には不気味な小品"Don't Ask Jack"、序文中に組み込まれる形で書かれた"The Wedding Present"なども好きです。
"The Wedding Present"は、新婚夫婦へのお祝い品に混じって送り主不明の小説原稿が届く。その小説には夫婦が実名で登場し、結婚式での様子が克明に描かれていた。その原稿はしまわれ忘れられ、夫婦は幸せに満ちた生活を送る。しかし数年後、妻が偶然原稿を見つけ読んでみると、いつの間にか原稿にはその後の夫婦の人生が書き加えられていた。そしてその内容は、実際の夫婦の人生とはまったく異なったものだった…というお話。
他にもラブクラフトのパロディー等、ゲイマンの多彩な作品群が収められています。
