Recently, Painting like this. (2001 Winter)
1. Drawing and Scanning a draft
I draw a draft on an A3 size xerox paper with a 0.5mm HB lead mechanical pencil. I don't spend time to clean up the draft before scanning because all draft lines will disappear when finish. The scanning condition is gray scale of 300ppi resolution.
The scanned data is processed with Photoshop 6.0 (adjusting level and trimming). The data mode is changed to RGB followed by transferring the draft to a new layer (See 1-4 of this page). The data (background + draft layer) is saved in Photoshop format.
2. Putting colors roughly
I open the data with Painter 6.1 and lay down basic colors on background layer using watercolor and pastel brush.
3. Painting background
I start to paint from background by smearing colors with a customized bristle brush. To depict clouds, an airbrush is used.
The draft was partially changed its color according to basic color by checking "Preserve Transparency" box in layer palette and tracing draft layer with thick "Pencil" brush. Then the draft layer is dropped and merged with background layer.
4. Painting characters
I start working on characters by same method as background.
5. Keep working...
Continue painting characters. Many corrections are made at this point. To add detail, I don't pay much regard to the draft.
6. Finishing to paint
Painting with Painter is finished by adding some details caused by another light source in right-lower position.
7. Adding some effect and Adjusting color
I back to Photoshop and add laser beams, dust, and markings on a gun using some layers. The work is finished by adjusting color with "Color Balance" layer.
