HAGORMO

Mihonomatsubara beach (Shizuoka prefecture near Mt. Fuji), the scene of the Noh "Hagoromo"

Once upon a time, a fisherman named Hakuryo found a beautiful robe (hagoromo) hanging on a pine tree at Mihonomatsubara beach near Mt. Fuji. When he took it and was about to bring back home, a heavenly maiden appeared and said to him, "The robe is mine. Please return it to me. I can't fly back to heaven without the robe." Hakuryo refused. The heavenly maiden cried out in despair. Finally the fisherman said " I'll return it if you show me the celestial dance wearing the robe." She accepted the condition. She danced for him wearing the robe and flew to heaven.

You can see a part of the Noh "Hagoromo" at the web site below. Please click the picture at the site and you can see the short movie.
