Holcombe, Lancashire, EnglandAccording to the Parkinson book, this is where the Parkinson family lived, and where Henry Parkinson and his siblings were born. The shipfs records from their Atlantic crossing in 1853 say that they came from Tottington – this is a slightly larger area which contains Holcombe. The tower visible on Holcombe Moor is Peel Tower, dedicated in Sept. 1852 in honor of a Prime Minister born in nearby Bury. The Parkinson children may have climbed this hill and may have seen this tower built and dedicated, shortly before they left England.
Pictured are Holcombe Moor with Peel Tower, and Holcombe Village in Sept. 2002. We had a nice lunch with my parents in the village pub. On another visit, we took the children for a walk up to Peel Tower at the top of the moor. I told my son about the little boy, his ancestor Henry Parkinson, who may have climbed the same hill as a child.
