Surname ranking How common are the surnames in this website? The number shown is the ranking of the surname's popularity in the U.S., according to the 1990 U.S. census (see website) @ Very common names: Anderson no. 11 (between Taylor and Thomas) Martin no. 16 (between Harris and Thompson) Barnes no. 79 (between Wood and Ross) Freeman no. 123 (between Murray and Wells) @ Fairly common names: Mathews no. 552 (between Wiggins and McClain) Woodward no. 733 (between Pennington and Finley) Shirley no. 1,016 (between Kendrick and Kendall) Parkinson no. 3,524 (between Rayburn and Pak) @ Somewhat uncommon names: Sharma no. 6,516 (between Speck and Shanklin) Suiter no. 7,179 (between Sullins and Stallard) Rossiter no. 8,699 (between Sargeant and Rosemond) Quackenbush no. 9,094 (between Quinton and Puma) @ Uncommon name: Darley no. 16,580 (between Darosa and Dalzell) Very uncommon names: Dixit, Kannasto, and Thirkell -- not shown in list of 88,799 names. This survey was done with a sample of approximately 1/40 of the U.S. population. This affects the ranking of the less common surnames in particular -- groupings of people with less common surnames could occur either within or outside of the sample used in the survey. According to the census website, "The fact that a name doesn't appear in these files does not mean that it is non existent, only that it is reasonably rare." Apparently, there were no Dixits, Kannastos or Thirkells within the sample population of 6.3 million people. |
