2. Mormon Immigration Index CD-Rom -- available at LDS Family History Centers. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Family on ship "Hope", 1842 -- Joseph (age 25), Margaret (age 24) and James (infant) Woodward. Joseph's occupation, shoemaker. All from England.
If eldest son Henry did exist, he is not found on the immigration records for the ship
journey. It seems likely that he did indeed die previous to the journey, as indicated by the FamilySearch site.

3. Census files. 1850 Census Pottawattamie County, Iowa, USA. Census date 1 June 1850.
Joseph Woodard age 38, born in England, occupation: none
Margaret Woodard age 34, born in England
James Woodard age 12, born in England.
Betsy Woodward age 7, born in Illinois.
Joseph Woodward age 6 months, born in Iowa.

-- Wellsville City Cemetery.

5. On the ship's customs list for early 1842 (source 2), he is shown as an "infant" -- Thebirth year found on the FamilySearch site (source 5) would make him about 1 1/2 onimmigration, and he could I guess have been seen as an "infant". If he wasreally 12 at the time of the 1850 census (source 3), his birth year would have been 1847/8, and he should havebeen about 4 on immigration -- "infant" doesn't sound right for this. Perhaps
the age of 12 is wrong but the other birth date (7 July 1840) might be ok.If this is the same person, it would seem that he died after 1850, not on 23/25Dec 1847 in St. Louis, Missouri, as it says on the FamilySearch site.

6. www.familysearch.org Ancestral File: Family Group Record for Joseph Hague Woodward and Margaret Molyneux Barnes.
Says James died 23 Dec 1847 (or 25 Dec 1847) possibly in St. Louis, Missouri.
He is however found in the Census record for 1850. Is it the same person?
Where did the 1847 St. Louis Missouri information come from?

7. Ed. Virginia Parkinson Darley Miller and Larie Goss Cory. Timothy Parkinson and Ann Fielding, Their Ancestors and Descendants - 1stEdition. Printed in Bountiful, Utah by Carr Printing Company, July 1972. p. 264: "Betsy Barnes Woodward, wife of Henry Fielding Parkinson, was born May3, 1841 in Nauvoo, Illinois to Margaret Barnes and Joseph Woodward. Her parents had come from Manchester, England to America in 1840 and settled in Nauvoo in1843 where they remained for some time. An incident is told of how her mother took her in her arms and went to the sceneand actually saw the Prophet Joseph Smith when he was martyred at Carthridge Jail.
... She was ill for several years and died on December 15, 1898 at the age of fifty-five."

The martyrdom of Joseph Smith took place on 27 June 1844. If Betsy was born in May 1843she would have been 1 year old at this time, if born in May 1844 she would have been 1 month old. If she was 55 in 1898 then she should have been born in 1843. The familysearch website (source 1) says she was born in 1844.
The 1850 census (source 3) says she is 7 years old. If she had just turned 7 in May, then her birth year would be 1843.
The Utah Cemetery Inventory (source 4) says she was born on 23 May 1844. The 1860 census (source 8) says she is 16. If she had just turned 16 in May, she would have been born in 1844. There is evidence for both 1843 and 1844.

8. Census files. June 1, 1860 Census of Wellsville, Cache County, Utah
family of Joseph and Margaret Wodward (misspelled -- should be Woodward):

Joseph Wodward, age 49, farmer, born in England
Margaret Wodward, age 45, born in England
Betsy Wodward, age 16, born in Illinois.
Joseph Wodward, age 10, born in Iowa.
Rachel Wodward, age 8, born in Utah Territory.
Martha Wodward, age 5, born in Utah Territory.
Margaret Wodward, age 5, born in Utah Territory.
Hyram Wodward, age 3, born in Utah Territory.
Jos. Ekleson, age 20, born in England

9. Ancestry.com, Utah Cemetery Inventory (source 4) -- Wellsville City Cemetery - says he was born 23 July 1850.

11. Census files. In the 1870 census of Wellsville, an extra child appears, James(?) Woodward, age 11.
He may have been adopted, as he does not appear in the 1860 census, when he should have been 1 year old.
